Home Schooling

Here is some food for thought concerning education. Read this article and write a summary of the reasons why more and more parents are opting for Home Schooling http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2007/feb/23/schools.uk3. Do you think parents are crazy or quite right to keep their children away from school? What is the situation like in Spain?

  2. In my opinion, home schooling doesn't make sense. Although parents said it exists bullying at school, it isn't the right option to withdraw their children from state school, because due to this, they're rising the probability of bullying to their children by their classmates. Because they started to seem weirdos and for them it must be frustrating.
Because of that, I think children needs attend lessons at state school. It's essential for them in order to develop their own behaviour and to develop a proper maturity.
I think parents want to educate their children as them (sometimes they opt for home schooling to have the chance to forced them to follow their steps, not due to the poor discipline of current education), and this is a mistake, because their children have the right to raise with other influences like classmates, teachers, friends in order to build up their own personality and so to speak, they can choose they life they want to live.

  3. Hi Manuel. I'm shocked to think you used to play truant at school. Naughty boy! You seem to be such an exemplary student in my class! As regards a proper education I think it really does depend on the school, the teachers and of course on the student as well.

  4. Hi Tim,
This is an interesting article. I have been able to train my English comprehension and I have learnt new vocabulary. In my opinion, parents are wrong when they decide to educate their children at home. Certainly, some problems like bullying or too much bureaucracy disappear but I think the best manner to educate a child is in school for several reasons. Firstly, parents not always are enough qualified to teach like a teacher does. On the other hand, children who are taught at home cannot mix or interact with other pupils and it is necessary for the correct development of themselves. Finally, I don't agree with this education system because I don't believe a child become more disciplined and responsible and it increases its own level of confidence or self-esteem. In Spain home schooling only is common in very special cases.
    See you

  5. Hi everybody!

This is a very complicated issue. Nowadays, education is one of the most concerning social problems in Spain. Could 'home schooling' be one of the solutions to improve our students'grades? Personally, I think to learn children at home is not a good idea to help them to develop their personality. They need to grow up with another children.
By the way, greetings from Brussels!

  6. Hi everybody

I am not behalf of home schooling because I consider that it is very important to keep in touch with another children and learn social skills.
Parents try to protect their children from a social phenomenon but I don,t think home schooling is the solution.
Children must learn to tolerate frustration and
know to choose the most convenient-Afortunately, we can find good school yet.

  7. Hi Davinia. I think you're right that pupils need to socialise and school is one of the most important places for this to take place. Perhaps you're right that parents shouldn't interfere by imposing home-schooling on their offsprings. After all we live in an imperfect world and the challenge is to make it as perfect as possible. Bullying is a completely different issue which seriously needs dealing with.

  8. Hi Alexis. I think you're right that home-schooling deprives children of social interaction but I presume home-schooling parents sign their children up for other social activities to ensure socialisation.Otherwise their offsprings would end up feeling isolated.

  9. Hi Estefania. I hope you're settling in well in Brussels and not missing rainy Spain too much!! You're right that students need to grow up amongst other children. I think that teaching your children full time at home would be very tiresome.Enjoy Belgium!

  10. Hi Rosalía. Many parents are certainly over-protective at times and perhaps home-schooling is counterproductive in the child's development. Many adults nowadays however talk about their schooldays as having been traumatic. Currently, many Secondary School teachers suffer from the burnout syndrome.Childrens' upbringing in the home surely has something to do with it, don't you think?

  11. Hi Tim. Education is a really complicated topic, but I think it's very important to understand that a child needs to learn discipline, responsibility and develop some skills, although is necessary for a child makes friend and learn social skills too. In my opinion, the best way to learn is in school, with teachers and classmates.

Anyway, I think nowadays there are many spoiled children whose use violence and fear to achieve their purpose . This is a serious problem in our society, because those children will be our future tomorrow..

  12. Hi Pilar. You're certainly right that there are a lot of spoilt/spoiled children who bully nowadays. This is a problem which needs to be nipped in the bud and parents and teachers as well as schoolkids must work hard to report it and re-educate the offenders.
